13.05.2026 - 11:07German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he sees signs of a turning point in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
This was reported by Die Welt.
“I believe the Ukrainians really do have the advantage. Russia is going through a period of weakness — economically, domestically, and on the battlefield,” Pistorius said following his visit to Ukraine.
According to the minister, the Ukrainians are making significant progress. Strikes on Russian military infrastructure in the rear are becoming increasingly precise and are yielding results.
During visits to Ukrainian command posts in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, Pistorius was shown how drones are used for reconnaissance and to combat Russian weapons systems and soldiers. The minister also had the opportunity to personally observe ongoing operations. In his assessment, Ukraine has substantially developed its capabilities — particularly since last year — and Germany’s armed forces are expected to benefit from this as well, within the framework of the strategic partnership.
“Today many are speaking of a decisive phase of the war, possibly in Ukraine’s favor,” the German minister noted.
On May 9, the Russian president, speaking at a parade in Moscow, claimed that the Russo-Ukrainian war was allegedly nearing its end. He also expressed readiness to hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not only in Moscow but also on the territory of a third country, calling this the main condition for signing a final agreement.
The Institute for the Study of War, responding to the Kremlin leader’s words about an imminent end to the war, noted that there are currently no signs that Russia intends to end its aggression.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, for his part, stated that Ukraine maintains a stable position and holds advantages in the current conditions of the war. According to him, the country is gradually transforming into a security exporter and an important partner for other states.
