NBU declares Ukrposhta chief Smilyansky professionally unfit and demands his removal
23.06.2026 17:32Polish customs has been refusing to let vehicles belonging to Ukrainian postal operator Ukrposhta through for two months — neither for deliveries nor in transit.
This was stated by the company’s director general, Ihor Smiliansky.
According to him, due to the blockade, Ukrposhta was forced to restructure its logistics and now routes around Poland via Hungary and Slovakia.
“For the past two months, Ukrposhta vehicles have been blocked by Polish customs, and we are forced to go around Poland via Hungary and Slovakia — where we have no issues — and have essentially redirected all our transit flows to bypass Poland,” Smiliansky said.
Smiliansky also explained that mail delivery within Poland itself is now only possible through the local Poczta Polska. At the same time, Polish authorities are letting through vehicles belonging to the competing Ukrainian service Nova Poshta — presumably because it is formally classified as an express delivery service rather than a postal operator.
“Competition is good. A bad attitude toward Ukraine is bad,” he added.
The occasion for Smiliansky’s public statement was a question about why President Volodymyr Zelensky sent the Order of the White Eagle to Poland via Nova Poshta rather than Ukrposhta. As UNIAN reported, Polish President Karol Nawrocki had previously stripped Zelensky of the award, after which the Ukrainian president published a post with photographs confirming that the order had been sent back to Poland via Nova Poshta courier service.
Following this, three more former Ukrainian presidents — Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko — announced their intention to return similar orders they had received from Poland at various times. All three criticized the Polish president’s decision to revoke the order from Zelensky.
