September 18, 2023Poland has stated that it will not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union unless the issue of grain exports is resolved.
Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus made this announcement, as reported by TVN24.
“If we do not create these tools today, Poland will definitely not agree to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Today, we need to create these tools because we will live with Ukrainian products longer. When Poland joined the European Union, we had to meet conditions, and these conditions were imposed on us very rigorously. We must set conditions for Ukraine,” Telus stated.
Telus believes that the Polish embargo on Ukrainian agricultural products “creates the possibility for Ukraine to join the European Union.”
“Based on the existing situation, Polish agriculture will never outcompete Ukrainian agriculture. There are several hundred thousand farms there. It’s a completely different agricultural sector, so our position is very strong,” the minister said.
Recently, Poland banned the import of grain from Ukraine, despite the EU’s lifting of such a ban.
In Ukraine, there has been surprise at Poland’s strong rhetoric on the grain issue.
