16.06.2026 14:24European officials are concerned that Donald Trump, after concluding the war with Iran, will attempt to seize control of the Ukraine negotiations and push European partners out of the peace settlement process.
This is reported by Politico.
According to the outlet, European officials fear that the American leader may derail the “maximum pressure on Russia” strategy. One anonymous European diplomat interviewed by Politico acknowledged that Trump’s temporary shift to the Iranian conflict at the expense of the Ukraine settlement “cannot be called a bad thing.”
European officials’ anxiety is heightened by statements from the Kremlin about an upcoming visit to Moscow by American negotiators — presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The last time they visited the Russian capital was in January.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov announced on June 14 — following a phone call between Trump and Putin — that Witkoff and Kushner would soon travel to Russia again. Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian president’s special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, specified that the meeting would take place in June.
According to Politico, on June 16 Trump and other G7 leaders will hold a two-hour working meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the question of ending the conflict in Ukraine.
