19.02.2026 - 12:01On Thursday morning, police detained the brother of the King of the United Kingdom, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office, amid an investigation into his ties to American financier Jeffrey Epstein.
This was reported by BBC and The Telegraph.
The detention took place on the former prince’s birthday—he turned 66 today.
As the BBC notes, the detention followed a statement by Thames Valley Police that it is investigating reports alleging that the former prince passed confidential information to Epstein, who was convicted in the United States for involving minors in prostitution. Police arrived on the morning of 19 February at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was detained on his 66th birthday.
The BBC also published a police statement in which officers did not name Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, but said that on 19 February they detained “a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office” and were carrying out searches in Berkshire and Norfolk. “The man is currently in police custody,” the statement said.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is the younger brother of Charles III and the second son of the late Elizabeth II. In 2011 he was forced to step down from the role of the United Kingdom’s trade envoy, and in 2019 he withdrew from all royal duties. In 2022 he was stripped of his military ranks and royal patronages amid allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has always denied.
That same year, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor settled a lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of three instances of coercing her into sex when she was underage. In October last year, he reportedly renounced his royal titles, including the title Duke of York, because of his conduct and ties to Epstein. In December, Charles III removed his brother’s last two titles—Knight of the Order of the Garter and Knight of the Royal Victorian Order.
On Thursday morning, six police vehicles were seen entering the Sandringham royal estate in Norfolk, where Mountbatten-Windsor lives.
