February 14, 2024Putin, through intermediaries, proposed to the United States to freeze the conflict in Ukraine, but the negotiations failed.
This is reported by Reuters, citing three Russian sources familiar with the discussions conducted between intermediaries from both sides.
The United States rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to cease fire in Ukraine with the aim of freezing the conflict, the publication states.
As the agency writes, the failure of the negotiations illustrates how far apart the two largest nuclear powers in the world remain.
At the same time, an American source denies any unofficial contacts and states that Washington will not negotiate without the involvement of Kyiv.
According to Russian sources, in 2023, Putin publicly and privately through intermediaries, including through Moscow’s Arab partners in the Middle East, indicated to Washington that he was willing to consider the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Putin proposed to freeze the conflict along the current lines and did not want to cede any of the Ukrainian territories controlled by Russia, said the agency’s interlocutors.
“Contacts with the Americans led to nothing,” said a high-ranking Russian official familiar with the discussions at the end of 2023 – beginning of 2024, speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters.
A second Russian source, knowledgeable about the contacts, told Reuters that the Americans, through intermediaries, informed Moscow that they would not discuss a possible ceasefire without the involvement of Ukraine, thus the negotiations ended in failure.
A third source, familiar with the discussions, said: “Everything failed with the Americans.”
The scale of the negotiations and their failure had not been reported earlier, Reuters notes.
The Kremlin, the White House, the State Department, and the CIA declined to comment.
