January 5, 2024Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to negotiate not with Ukraine, but with the West.
This information reported according to experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
This is how they interpreted Putin’s recent statement that “Ukraine itself is not an enemy for us.”
Recall that on January 1, the Kremlin leader said that Russia’s enemies are those Western entities “that want to destroy Russian statehood” and achieve “Russia’s strategic defeat on the battlefield,” using Ukraine in the process.
Experts at the Institute for the Study of War believe that Putin is deliberately excluding Ukraine from the declared adversaries in order, sooner or later, to start negotiations with Western states bypassing Kyiv. To achieve this, he portrays the invasion of Ukraine as Russia’s struggle against the West, depicting Ukraine itself as a “passive pawn” to “disguise its expansionist and maximalist goals in establishing complete effective Russian control over Ukraine.”
At the same time, Putin expressed a desire to end the conflict between Russia and the West, but only on Kremlin’s terms, emphasizing that Russia would not concede its positions.
