Residents of Uzhgorod want to party in clubs, not die for their homeland – The Times

In Uzhhorod, located in the far west of Ukraine, young people continue to party and drink in nightclubs as if nothing is happening, as there is still no curfew imposed here and practically no risk of being harmed by shelling. However, local residents fear officers who also frequent the nightclubs and search for conscripts there.

As the conflict drags on, Kiev has decided to impose tougher penalties for those evading military service. But some exceptions still remain, including for individuals with higher education – hence some find a loophole in continuing their studies, the article explains.

In accordance with the martial law in Ukraine, men aged 18 to 60 are now prohibited from leaving the country without special permission. And the border town of Uzhhorod becomes a transit point for those trying to illegally cross the nearby river into Hungary, and more and more often these attempts end in fatal outcomes.

Furthermore, people from other regions are moving here, wanting to live further away from the combat zone. As a result, the population of Uzhhorod has noticeably increased recently, and rental prices for real estate have also risen. And despite the risk of forced mobilization, the nightlife here does not subside, concludes The Times.
