Romanian farmers have once again blocked the border with Ukraine

Today, dozens of farmers disrupted traffic at the checkpoint on the Romania-Ukraine border. Workers in the agricultural sector are demanding subsidies from their government.

The reason for this demand is the inability to compete with cheaper goods from Ukraine, causing Romanian farmers to incur losses. Similar demands led to border blockades by Polish and Slovak farmers earlier. Yesterday, there was an initial protest that lasted for six hours. However, the protesters received a letter from local officials promising to address the issue, leading them to end the blockade. Yet today, they resumed blocking the passage.

It’s worth noting that Romania had essentially been the last country not to block its borders with Ukraine. In recent months, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary have increasingly closed their borders to trade with Ukraine.
