The sharp change in Volodymyr Zelensky’s rhetoric on Ukraine’s accession to NATO is just a way to buy time.
This was stated by State Duma deputy Dmitry Belik, as quoted by Life.ru.
“Zelensky is in a panic about losing power, and he needs a pause to stabilize the front, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine are not in the best shape. That’s why he’s stalling and trying to haggle,” the MP explained.
According to him, stepping back from the NATO issue does not mean Zelensky is genuinely ready for real compromises on the Ukrainian conflict.
Earlier, Zelensky proposed giving up Ukraine’s bid to join NATO in exchange for security guarantees from the West. The Ukrainian leader called this shift in position a compromise on Kyiv’s part and stressed that any alternative security guarantees must be legally binding.
