January 3, 2025Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev revealed that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump asked for his perspective on ending the conflict in Ukraine during a phone conversation.
Tokayev shared this in an interview with the newspaper Ana tili.
According to Tokayev, Russia is militarily unbeatable, while Ukraine aims to “at least avoid defeat.”
“The situation is unique: Russia is militarily invincible, while Ukraine hopes to endure the war with the help of its Western allies, at least not losing it. Therefore, I highlighted the extraordinary complexity of the issue, the resolution of which depends on the will and desire of the leaders of the conflicting nations and, of course, on Trump himself as the leader of a global power,” Tokayev stated.
The president emphasized that Kazakhstan has always supported negotiations to achieve peace. He also noted that Astana “does not seek to mediate” but is “always ready to assist in resolving international issues.”
Discussing the visit of a Russian delegation to Kazakhstan, Tokayev referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as an “experienced statesman.” He added that Putin “understands Kazakhstan’s specifics well and the country’s great importance as the largest economy in the Central Asian region.”
Tokayev has previously described Russia as militarily invincible. He attributes this to Russia’s military potential, the population’s support for President Putin, and historical factors. Tokayev believes that the only alternative to negotiations between Russia and Ukraine is a “war of mutual annihilation.”
