Slovakia considers Ukraine unprepared for EU membership but promises not to block the start of negotiations with Ukraine in the upcoming vote.
Prime Minister Robert Fico stated this, as reported by Dennik N.
“Ukraine is absolutely unprepared to begin negotiations on joining the EU,” Fico stated.
At the same time, he pledged not to obstruct the European Council’s decision on initiating negotiations with Ukraine regarding EU membership at the summit on December 14-15.
It’s worth noting that Hungary had promised to block Ukraine’s accession. Austria had also expressed opposition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that if the vote fails, “it will indicate that Putin vetoed this decision.”
According to Reuters, due to the lack of consensus among EU member states on this issue, the decision on initiating Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations might be postponed until March.
