December 13, 2023For Ukrainian refugees who have obtained temporary protection status in Germany (approximately 1.2 million), the issue of employment is becoming increasingly pressing.
Currently, only 19% of refugees have found employment. However, the government aims to raise this figure to 40% next year. Considering that a significant number of children and elderly individuals have migrated, achieving a 40% employment rate equates to work for almost all employable Ukrainians. However, the employment situation for Ukrainians in the German labor market is ambiguous.
On one hand, there are abundant job offers. On the other hand, for the main group of Ukrainian refugees (women), these jobs are often unsuitable (primarily geared toward men, especially those involving manual labor). Additionally, the suitable jobs often tend to be low-paying. Moreover, there is a growing shadow job market for Ukrainians in Germany, involving work without official employment.
