Billionaire Elon Musk previously linked his decision not to activate Starlink satellite communications over the Crimean Peninsula to the U.S. sanctions against Russia. These sanctions included Crimea, and it was not allowed to establish connections there.
“The reason Starlink was off initially was because the United States put sanctions on Russia. And sanctions include Crimea, and so, we were not allowed to do it,” Musk said during an online presentation at a technology development conference.
He added that to enable Starlink operations over Crimea, he needed permission from the U.S. government, which the company did not have at the time Ukraine requested it.
Later, Musk stated that he had decided to transfer control of the portion of the Starlink satellite internet used in the conflict in Ukraine to the Pentagon. This move aimed to shift responsibility for boundaries and usage rules away from him personally.
