21.06.2025 - 11:14The Swiss People’s Party (SVP) has submitted a proposal to the National Council to tighten the conditions for granting protection status S to Ukrainian refugees, arguing that the situation in much of Ukraine has stabilized and there are no active hostilities in those areas.
This was reported by Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).
“The granting of S status should be limited to Ukrainians who are truly in need of protection,” the statement from Switzerland’s largest political party says.
“Moreover, the SVP parliamentary group opposes any new multibillion-dollar aid packages for Ukraine.”
The party recalled that since 2022, Switzerland has granted temporary protection to 65,000 Ukrainians, all of whom currently hold S status. The costs associated with this have totaled around 3 billion Swiss francs (approximately 3.36 billion USD).
The SVP argues that temporary protection should only be available to individuals coming from regions not controlled by Ukraine, or from areas where active fighting is ongoing.
“Ukraine is 15 times larger than Switzerland. Large parts of the country are not affected by hostilities, and accepting refugees from those areas is not justified. The fact that people with S protection status frequently travel back to these regions from Switzerland proves this,” the party emphasized.
Last year, Hungary began evicting Ukrainian refugees from shelters if they came from areas not near the front lines.
In Estonia, Ukrainian refugees lost access to discounted train fares on the state railway company Elron.
