Ukrainians have lost trust in telethons – survey
19.02.2024 - 13:42In August of last year, Hunko was arrested on suspicion of receiving a bribe of 78,000 euros. However, by November, the MP was released from custody and was spotted attending parliamentary sessions.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) caught the member of parliament accepting a bribe while he promised to “sell” land belonging to the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences. The SBU press service stated that the MP, along with accomplices, planned to “settle” the issue of leasing state-owned land in favor of a businessman. He had already received an initial payment of 78,000 euros, which was handed to him in a package.
However, he later managed to be released on bail of 900,000 euros and was seen in parliament during a session. Thus, the deputy practically evaded accountability and the court case is likely to drag on for many months, after which the case may be closed. This is the same scenario that has unfolded with many other politicians and officials caught in bribery scandals.
