At the same time, from a geopolitical point of view, Russia’s goals can be quite extensive, the article’s author notes. In addition to Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia, they concern the Black Sea, straits, Transnistria, the Baltics, and the security of Kaliningrad.
Meanwhile, the complex of agreements that helped avoid open confrontation and nuclear war during the Cold War has largely fallen apart, mainly at Washington’s initiative. So, the comparison of the current situation with the Cold War leads the author of the article to rather discouraging conclusions.
