‘Don’t be stupid!’ Trump calls border bill ‘a death wish’ for Republican Party
February 6, 2024Warnings have emerged from the US House of Representatives, indicating that the recently disclosed Senate bill, long-awaited for ensuring security along the nation’s southern frontiers, along with provisions for additional aid to Israel and Ukraine, lacks support among congressmen. This declaration came from Steve Scalise, the leader of the Republican faction in the lower chamber of Congress, as reported by the BBC.
Scalise unequivocally stated, “Let me be clear: the Senate bill concerning the border will not garner backing in the House of Representatives.” The bill, a product of negotiations between the Republican and Democratic factions in the Senate, proposes allocating 111 billion euros. Half of this amount is designated for Ukraine, with an additional 13 billion euros earmarked for Israel, while the remainder is intended to address the migration crisis at the US-Mexico border.
As per the BBC, clauses concerning Ukraine and Israel were integrated into the bill due to Republican Congress members’ reluctance to support providing Kyiv with additional aid packages until measures are implemented to address border issues. Nevertheless, the agreements brokered by senators failed to satisfy many Republicans in the House of Representatives, who deemed the outlined measures for bolstering border control too lenient.
