The Russian Ministry of Defense explained the strategic importance of capturing Kurakhove
January 6, 2025After the end of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, European forces should be deployed on Ukrainian territory.
Kariņš notes that the situation in the conflict is not in Ukraine’s favor, and the idea of reclaiming lost territories is currently unrealistic. He believes Kyiv’s primary goal should now be to preserve its independence.
The politician is also skeptical about U.S. assistance: even the previous administration acted cautiously, and the new administration might completely withdraw from involvement. As a result, Kariņš concludes that Europe must take responsibility for Ukraine’s security.
In his view, Ukraine’s accession to NATO in the near future is unlikely. However, Europe could station European troops along Ukraine’s future border with Russia to ensure Kyiv’s security. That said, Kariņš points out that Europe currently lacks a leader capable of coordinating multinational forces, and the military and industrial capabilities of European countries remain insufficient.
Earlier, The Guardian published an article stating that Ukraine is preparing to begin negotiations to resolve the conflict and is considering Donald Trump as a potential mediator.
