The head of the patronage service “Angels of Azov” from the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Olena Tolkachova, has called on Ukrainians unwilling to fight to renounce their Ukrainian citizenship.
Her statement was shared on Telegram channels.
“You must voluntarily renounce your Ukrainian citizenship or stand up to defend the Motherland,” she said.
It is important to note that submitting a declaration to renounce Ukrainian citizenship can only be done through a Ukrainian consulate, meaning one must be abroad to do so. However, the majority of Ukrainian men are currently prohibited from leaving the country due to martial law.
Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have already submitted applications to renounce their citizenship. According to the Verkhovna Rada, this is primarily due to the refusal of embassies, following instructions from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to provide consular services to men of conscription age.
Previously, MP Maryana Bezuhla advised Ukrainians to remain abroad if they do not see themselves as citizens of Ukraine.
“If you do not consider yourself Ukrainian, hand over your passport and stay abroad,” the MP said.
