October 4, 2023The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to remove its Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, from his position.
The vote saw 216 members of Congress in favor of his removal and 210 against.
The initiative to remove McCarthy came from Republican Matt Gaetz, who was dissatisfied with McCarthy for compromising with Democrats to pass a 45-day budget to avoid a government shutdown. Gaetz also accused McCarthy of allegedly making a “secret deal” with President Joe Biden regarding funding for Ukraine.
Opposition to McCarthy’s leadership united members of the Democratic minority and the right-wing faction of the Republican party.
Kevin McCarthy’s removal marks the first time in U.S. history that a Speaker of the House has been ousted from their position. A similar attempt was made by Congress members in 1910, but it was unsuccessful.
McCarthy was elected as Speaker on January 7th, following five days and 15 rounds of voting.
Patrick McHenry, a congressman from North Carolina, will serve as the temporary Speaker of the House until a permanent Speaker is chosen. The legislative work of the Congress will effectively be put on hold without a Speaker in place. Members of the House will need to nominate candidates for a vote, followed by elections. There are no clear favorites for the position, as noted by U.S. media.
All of this occurs amid uncertainty regarding the funding of the U.S. government once the temporary budget expires and amid the absence of decisions regarding further assistance to Ukraine.
