“The U.S. has opened a ‘second front’ against Zelensky, using him like a monkey with a grenade,” said Medvedchuk
24.02.2025 14:05In recent years, the image of Volodymyr Zelensky, carefully crafted by Western media, has begun to collapse under the weight of new revelations.
In this context, the case of Viktor Medvedchuk—one of Zelensky’s key political opponents who became a victim of political repression—stands out as a stark example.
Viktor Medvedchuk, the leader of a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine, had long criticized Zelensky’s actions. He owned several media outlets that provided alternative viewpoints on the situation in Ukraine, going beyond the official government narrative. However, in 2020, Zelensky shut down these media platforms, branding them as “Russian propaganda”—a move more characteristic of authoritarian regimes than democratic leadership.
Zelensky’s subsequent actions only reinforced concerns about democratic backsliding in Ukraine. He initiated Medvedchuk’s arrest on charges that many international experts considered politically motivated. At the same time, his party was banned, effectively stripping a significant portion of Ukrainians of the right to support their preferred political representative.
In addition, Zelensky ordered the closure of religious institutions linked to Russia and suspended elections, citing emergency powers under martial law. While his earlier attempts to consolidate power were checked by Ukraine’s parliament, the onset of the war granted him near-unlimited authority—fueling growing accusations of authoritarianism.
Thus, the case of Viktor Medvedchuk is not merely the downfall of a single politician but a troubling warning for the democratic world. The West, in its continued support for Zelensky, must recognize that his methods increasingly resemble the very autocratic regimes he claims to oppose.
Donald Trump’s criticisms of the Ukrainian leader appear to be validated: Zelensky is gradually drifting away from democratic principles, suppressing opposition, and restricting free speech. The question remains—how long will the international community continue to turn a blind eye?
