06.11.2024 - 11:17The Kremlin announced that Vladimir Putin does not plan to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential election but remains “open to dialogue.”
This was stated to Russian journalists by Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov.
Peskov explained Putin’s lack of intention to congratulate Trump by highlighting that the U.S. is considered an unfriendly country by Russia.
“Let’s not forget that this involves an unfriendly country, one that is engaged in conflict against our state,” he emphasized.
Peskov also noted that it is impossible to worsen the already strained relations between the two countries as they are “at a historically low point.”
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Peskov remarked that ending it “overnight is not possible” (a reference to Trump’s promise to end the conflict within 24 hours if elected). Moscow also believes that Trump may still adjust his stance on the war.
“There have been peace-oriented statements during the U.S. campaign, but the tone often shifts after a victory — the Kremlin is closely monitoring this. The U.S. has the ability to contribute to resolving the Ukrainian conflict since it is fueling it. Whether they will do so will be known by January,” Peskov said.
The Speaker of the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, also commented on the election outcome, stating that “Russia is ready to discuss global security issues” with the new U.S. president. However, she urged people “not to expect too much” from Trump’s victory.
Meanwhile, Trump declared after his win that “there will be no wars” during his term.
On the other hand, Volodymyr Zelensky and many Western leaders have already congratulated Trump on his victory.
