The amount lost by Ukraine due to the refusal of the US to provide assistance has been calculated
03.10.2023 07:20The goals of the United States in Ukraine vary from implementing NATO protocols and standards to privatizing banks.
“The confidential version of the ‘Comprehensive Country Strategy’ document is three times longer than the publicly available version published by the State Department and contains many more details about U.S. goals in Ukraine, from privatizing its banks to assisting schools in teaching the English language to the Ukrainian military adopting NATO protocols,” the publication states.
Washington wants the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to “create corps of professional junior officers and non-commissioned officers based on NATO doctrine principles,” despite the fact that NATO is far from agreeing to Ukraine’s accession. Politico notes that the format and content of Ukrainian military documents should reflect NATO terminology.
As the newspaper highlights, the White House is much more concerned about corruption in Ukraine than it publicly acknowledges.
“The document emphasizes that corruption could lead Western allies to abandon Ukraine’s fight against Russian invasion, and that Kyiv cannot delay efforts to combat corruption,” the article states.
According to the publication, U.S. authorities want to pressure Ukraine to reduce the level of corruption in the country, especially because “American dollars are at stake.” Discussing this issue could “encourage opponents of American assistance to Ukraine,” including Republican lawmakers who oppose aid to Kyiv.
The newspaper, citing an unnamed U.S. official, writes that President Joe Biden’s administration is negotiating with Ukrainian authorities about the possibility of conditioning future economic assistance to Kyiv on anti-corruption reforms and making Ukraine an attractive destination for private investments. However, such conditions are not being considered for military assistance to Ukraine.
The Biden administration also intends to work towards returning the nationalized Alfa-Bank in Ukraine to private ownership.
“Apparently, this concerns the establishment known as Sense Bank, which was previously owned by the Russian side but was nationalized by Ukraine,” the article states.
The U.S. would also like Ukraine to select over two thousand new judges and clear a backlog of more than nine thousand cases of judicial misconduct.
As NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg asserted, Ukraine will be invited to join the alliance by unanimous decision of all members and upon meeting all conditions. However, he did not mention any specific timelines, emphasizing that the accession procedure does not include temporal limits.
