October 3, 2023In the center of Warsaw, a Ukrainian citizen demanded that a street musician from Belarus not sing in Russian.
The conflict was captured in a video and shared on social media.
The Belarusian musician was singing a song by the band “Lyapis Trubetskoy” called “Warriors of Light,” which was very popular among supporters of the Maidan movement and Ukrainian volunteers in 2014. However, the Ukrainian woman was still upset that the musician was performing the song in Russian. She mentioned that the song had been translated into Ukrainian. In response, the musician said he didn’t know Ukrainian. She then suggested he sing it in Belarusian, but the guy replied that he hadn’t learned Belarusian in school.
Lately, there have been increasing instances in Ukraine and beyond where some Ukrainians dictate to others which language they should use. Earlier in Odessa, a woman who spoke Russian tried to prevent a street musician from singing songs in Russian.
Recently, there was also a language-related scandal in Lviv involving Viktor Tsoi’s songs. The conflict occurred between a street musician from Odessa named Alexander and Member of Parliament Natalia Pipa.
