Ukrainian draft dodgers have started attempting to break through into Belarus
September 6, 2024A mobilized man in Lviv discovered his HIV status after receiving a draft notice.
This was reported by local media.
A 36-year-old Lviv resident named Ihor, who works as a road paver, received a draft notice while at work and was required to undergo a medical examination. The medical commission conducted a rapid HIV test, which came back positive. He was advised to start antiretroviral therapy, but he decided not to begin treatment, underestimating the seriousness of his condition.
Four months later, he returned to the medical center in critical condition, suffering from disseminated tuberculosis and pneumocystis pneumonia—conditions that often lead to death in people with HIV. He was only able to breathe with oxygen support.
Doctors took all necessary measures to save his life. After initial emergency care, Ihor was transferred to the Center for Pulmonary Health. Doctors predict that his lungs will recover.
Now, the man must remain on lifelong antiretroviral therapy—taking one pill a day. The military medical commission will determine whether he can be mobilized.
Earlier this summer, the Ukrainian government passed a resolution that citizens aged 16 to 25 will be automatically added to the conscription registry when applying for a passport, without undergoing a military medical examination.
