April 19, 2024Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denis Malyuska suggests mobilizing convicts for combat, proposing that all convicts be sent directly to the front line.
He voiced his proposal on the “Rada” TV channel.
“Perhaps those who are capable of killing would be more effective even as soldiers, compared to those who haven’t killed yet, and safer than those who have been robbing for decades, only to be handed a rifle later,” Malyuska said.
The Minister of Justice clarified that all convicts called up as a result of mobilization would be immediately sent to the frontline.
“Prisoners will serve in separate units, so at least the existing schemes, when someone mobilized somehow manages to serve in the territories of western regions of Ukraine, will be impossible. These will be precisely units that will be on the front line or close to it,” the minister noted.
At the same time, Malyuska acknowledged that his department would like to relieve correctional facilities amidst the increasing number of inmates.
“The number of those entering our institutions is significantly increasing, we might burst at some point. Therefore, we need to think about how to reduce the number of those we take care of in our institutions,” the minister said.
Earlier, the Law Enforcement Committee recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt as a basis a bill allowing the mobilization of convicts.
It is known that convicts can serve not only in the ranks but also as sergeants and officers, said People’s Deputy Yelena Shulyak.
