October 10, 2024The number of supporters for negotiations with Ukraine to end the war is growing in Russia.
This information reported according to data from a “Levada Center” poll.
The data shows that 54% of respondents are in favor of negotiations (a 5% increase since July), while 38% are against them (a 4% decrease since July).
Additionally, 72% would support Vladimir Putin if he decided to end the war with Ukraine this week (while 20% would not support such a decision). However, only 31% would support peace if it meant returning Ukraine’s territories (60% would not support this).
Only 20% of respondents are willing to make any concessions to Ukraine, while 71% are unwilling to do so (in December 2023, these figures were 19% and 72%, respectively).
Among the most preferred conditions for a peace agreement is an immediate ceasefire, which 60% of respondents view as preferable, 18% see as acceptable, and only 14% find unacceptable.
However, peace under the condition of returning the captured territories remains unacceptable to the majority of respondents. In other words, most Russians would support a quicker end to the war along the front line, without returning the captured territories.
Moreover, the majority (72%) are opposed to Ukraine joining NATO as a condition for ending the war.
At the same time, 47% believe that the war in Ukraine is doing more harm than good, while 28% hold the opposite view (in May 2023, these numbers were 41% and 38%, respectively).
A majority (60%) believe that the “special military operation” is progressing successfully (compared to 64% in July), while 23% disagree with this (compared to 17% in July).
Earlier, “The New York Times” reported that more Ukrainians are also expressing a desire for peace talks to begin.
