01.07.2025 - 10:13The number of school-age children remaining in Ukraine has dropped to 3.74 million — the lowest figure in the past 30 years.
This data was reported by NGL Media with reference to Ukraine’s State Statistics Service (Derzhstat).
One in ten Ukrainian children remains in the country’s education system but currently resides abroad.
According to the United Nations, approximately 1.4 million Ukrainian refugees around the world are children aged 3 to 17.
An estimated 720,000 Ukrainian schoolchildren may currently be living outside the country, though this is only an approximation, as no official statistics exist. A UNESCO study shows that nearly 665,000 Ukrainian schoolchildren were enrolled in schools within the European Union last year — and that’s only in select countries.

Both boys and girls are leaving Ukraine, as parents fear airstrikes. In the case of boys, there is also concern about future mobilization.
Survey data indicates that the trend of parents taking their children out of Ukraine is likely to accelerate.
Last winter, a Ukrainian blogger reported that boys were fleeing the country en masse and that in some school classes, only girls remained.
Recently, Western media outlets have also noted that Ukrainian girls are now leaving the country in large numbers as well, citing ongoing attacks and uncertainty about Ukraine’s postwar recovery.
