Official figures for the number of draft dodgers fleeing across Ukraine’s borders are underestimated by a factor of 30.
This statement was made by former advisor to the President’s Office, Oleksiy Arestovych, during an interview with journalist Yulia Latynina.
“If I told you now how many people try to flee Ukraine every day, you would be shocked. The State Border Guard Service acknowledged 100 people per day, and a deputy admitted to 200. But this figure is approximately 30 times higher. Every day,” said the former advisor to the President’s Office of Ukraine.
According to him, “in translation, this means that five brigades try to escape from Ukraine every day. Many do escape.”
Previously, media cited survey data indicating that almost half of the surveyed Ukrainians (46.1%) do not consider it shameful to be a draft dodger. Avoiding military service is deemed disgraceful by 29.1%, while 24.8% were unsure. Support for draft dodgers is highest in the south (60%) and west of Ukraine (48%).
