August 2, 2024The former head of the Bozhkivska Correctional Colony No. 16 in the Poltava region, where torture of inmates was documented, received payouts totaling 400,000 hryvnias (over 9,000 euros) upon his dismissal in July 2023. Six months later, he was granted the maximum possible pension.
This information was reported by Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets.
“In July 2023, during an internal investigation and before final conclusions were reached, the resignation of the head of the institution was approved at his own request, with the award of bonuses amounting to 400% of his salary ‘for special achievements in work’ and other monetary payments totaling approximately 400,000 hryvnias (more than 9,000 euros). Subsequently, in December 2023, the former head of this institution managed to secure a decision granting him the maximum pension level,” stated the publication.
Lubinets called on the State Bureau of Investigations to examine why “the leadership of the penal enforcement service decided to unjustifiably and illegally award the head a 400% bonus after documented systematic violations and instances of torture and beatings of inmates.”
In May, the State Bureau of Investigations of Ukraine revealed a large-scale system of inmate torture. Harrowing footage of the beatings of prisoners was released at that time. Four employees of the Bozhkivska Correctional Colony were implicated in connection with these allegations.
