The war in Ukraine may periodically escalate and de-escalate – a report on the assessment of global risks in 2024
January 16, 2024German politician Sahra Wagenknecht continues to call for a ceasefire in Ukraine, suggesting that Kyiv should not set conditions but make concessions to initiate negotiations to end the conflict.
During an appearance on the German channel Das Erste, Wagenknecht outlined two specific demands for Ukraine.
Firstly, she called for a “renunciation of the prospect of joining NATO, of military bases, and missile bases on its territory.” The leader of the opposition party Die Linke considers this demand “central” and points out that Russia was willing to negotiate a ceasefire in Istanbul if Kyiv abandoned NATO.
Secondly, since “the war has been going on for two years longer” and “the Russians have solidified in certain areas,” Wagenknecht deems territorial concessions from Ukraine inevitable. The German politician notes that some territories have officially become part of Russia.
In the interview, Wagenknecht reiterated that the German foreign policy strategy of “arming Ukraine to improve its negotiating position” has proven to be a mistake.
“The opposite happened,” assessed the opposition politician, stating that Ukraine’s negotiating position is worse today than it was two years ago.
She urges Kyiv to start negotiations without preconditions.
