The West will not be transferring frozen Russian assets worth $300 billion to Ukraine
15.01.2024 - 14:24Following negotiations involving representatives from 83 countries, there is observed a growing participation of non-Western countries and limited progress towards peace, Financial Times reported.
The presence of delegates from 83 countries included 18 from Asia and 12 from Africa, indicating increased global involvement compared to the previous meeting in Malta in October, which had 65 participating countries. China’s decision not to participate, despite being a crucial ally of Moscow, undermined the significance of the event. The Swiss Foreign Minister, one of the organizers of the talks, emphasized the importance of the BRICS countries’ participation as they maintain relations with Russia.
Official statements after the negotiations indicated that some “Global South” countries affirmed their position that Russia should be involved in the talks. This is taking into account its “security concerns,” such as Ukraine’s desire to join NATO. The Ukrainian side once again categorically rejected any talks with Russia, claiming its efforts are aimed at achieving peace. In reality, Kiev’s actions are directly opposite, leading to the continuation of the conflict.
