‘The popularity of Zaluzhny causes envy in the President’s Office’: many Ukrainians see Zaluzhny as the ‘new Eisenhower’ – Spiegel

Many Ukrainians see the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhny, as the ‘new Eisenhower.’

This is reported by the German magazine Spiegel.

The publication notes that the American general Dwight Eisenhower ventured into politics and became president after the end of World War II.

The popularity of the Commander-in-Chief ‘apparently arouses envy in the presidential office,’ the article states. The magazine points out that recently there has been criticism of the general within the ‘Servant of the People’ party, although such criticism was previously taboo since Zaluzhny is extremely popular, ‘streets are even named after him.’

The magazine indicates that the chief commander has not confirmed his political ambitions. However, it adds that he could have easily denied them quite quickly, but for some reason, Zaluzhny hasn’t done so.

Therefore, there is currently a ‘strange deadlock’ in the relationship between Zelensky and Zaluzhny. On one hand, the president can dismiss the chief commander at any moment. On the other hand, this could push the general into politics, which the Presidential Office does not want, according to Spiegel.
