Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told the UN that “everyone already understands there will be no military solution to the conflict in Ukraine,” and that talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin “gave hope” for a negotiated settlement.
Meanwhile, Trump said he met and embraced the Brazilian president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He announced that they would hold a bilateral meeting next week.
“I like him. He likes me… We had chemistry,” Trump said.
At the same time, he issued a warning:
“Brazil is behaving wrongly. They will have difficulties. And they won’t have them only if they cooperate with us,” he noted.
Recently in Brazil, former president Jair Bolsonaro—an open supporter of Trump—was imprisoned. The U.S. president has imposed high tariffs on Brazil.
In July, Trump introduced a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods in an attempt to stop the trial of the former president.
Bolsonaro served as Brazil’s leader from 2019 to 2023, after which he was succeeded by Lula da Silva.
