Polish transporters are considering joining a strike at the Ukrainian border, and farmers might also participate, as per Bloomberg’s report.
About 100 farmers from the Betrayed Countryside association are planning a three-day protest at the Medyka checkpoint, according to Lukasz Martyn, one of the organizers. Members of the International Road Transport Union, representing Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Lithuania, have appealed to Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, urging a reassessment of the transport liberalization agreement with Ukraine, set to expire in June 2024.
Amidst the war, the EU permitted Ukrainian carriers to transport goods without requiring permits to facilitate and hasten cargo movement. Last week, Polish carriers initiated blockades at three checkpoints on the Ukrainian border. Despite joint proposals from the European Commission, Ukraine and Poland, the carriers declined to end the strike. Their primary demand is a return to the permit system for Ukrainian transporters.
