The section on Ukraine’s membership prospects disappeared from the NATO Secretary General’s annual report

Reference to Ukraine’s NATO Membership prospects disappears from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s annual report.

In the 2023 report, it was stated that “Ukraine’s future is in NATO and the Alliance will support Ukraine on its path toward future membership.”

However, in the 2024 document, such wording is absent. Instead, it only mentions that “among these partners, NATO has created special structures for relations with Ukraine and Georgia.”

The new document also does not mention the decision made at the NATO summit in Washington in the summer, where it was stated that allies “will support [Ukraine] on its irreversible path toward full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.”

In the preface to the new report, the NATO Secretary General states that “NATO allies are united in their desire for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly stated that he does not believe in Ukraine’s prospects of joining NATO. He believes that if this “issue had not been raised, there would have been a much greater chance that the war would not have started.”
