09.04.2026 13:04During his visit to Hungary, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that he considers disputes between Ukraine and Russia over “a few square kilometers” to be unreasonable.
Vance was quoted by The Guardian.
Commenting on the negotiation process aimed at settling the Russian-Ukrainian war, Vance questioned the value of fighting over “a few square kilometers,” clearly hinting that Kyiv should make territorial concessions.
“I would say to both the Russians and the Ukrainians: you know, at this stage we are talking about haggling over a few square kilometers of territory one way or the other. Is that worth the loss of hundreds of thousands of additional young Russian and Ukrainian men? Is it worth additional months or even years of high energy prices and economic devastation? We think the answer is clearly ‘no,’” Vance said.
He added that “it takes two to tango,” and therefore Russians and Ukrainians must ultimately reach an agreement themselves.
“So while Viktor Orbán and President Trump will continue working toward a peaceful settlement, essentially all we can do is open the door. The Russians and Ukrainians have to walk through it themselves,” Vance said.
