13.06.2024 - 13:13The results of the European Parliament elections may signal a weakening of Western support for Ukraine and growing fatigue with the conflict, causing concern among American and European officials.
This was reported by Politico.
According to the publication, U.S. and European officials are worried that the strengthening of far-right positions in the European Parliament “heralds growing Western fatigue” with the fighting in Ukraine.
Former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Heather Conley believes that if Marine Le Pen’s “National Rally” party, which received the most votes in the European Parliament elections, wins a majority in the French snap elections, new political initiatives to allocate funds to aid Kyiv could be frozen.
Regarding Germany, where the right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” achieved significant success in the European elections, the results could be a “warning of borrowed time” for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Jim Townsend.
Additionally, many former officials believe that the European election results could prompt an acceleration of military supplies to Kyiv in the coming months, in light of the potential victory of Republican Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential race. Politico notes that Western authorities are actively taking steps to send as much aid to Ukraine as possible in the near future.
The European Parliament elections for the 2024-2029 term were held in all EU countries from June 6 to 9. Right-wing and far-right parties improved their positions in many EU countries during the voting. In France, representatives of these political forces received twice as many votes as the centrist bloc of President Emmanuel Macron. As a result, Macron later decided to dissolve the National Assembly (the lower house of parliament) and hold snap elections. Right-wing forces also strengthened their positions in several other EU countries. The political tension following the elections led to a decline in stock indices in Western Europe.
