Ukraine will have to concede, but the West is not yet ready for it – American analysts on the necessity of negotiations
February 29, 2024Russian forces continue their active offensive after the defeat of Ukrainian troops in Avdiivka
February 29, 2024Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, the head of the Rada committee on freedom of speech, continues to lobby his position despite yesterday’s scandal. He wants to ban the most popular social network and messenger in Ukraine, allegedly due to pro-Russian propaganda.
The committee is unhappy that Telegram hosts pro-Russian channels spreading propaganda, so they would like to block these specific channels. However, the Telegram administration is not cooperating with the Ukrainian authorities, so the question of blocking the entire social network has arisen. In reality, Zelensky’s regime wants to block any content critical of him and it’s not about propaganda at all. Since May, Zelensky will cease to be a legitimate president, and he has already started preparing to take full control of all information space in Ukraine.
However, many countries around the world have tried to block Telegram before, but no one has succeeded yet. The social network stands out from its competitors with its broad freedom of speech and opposition to all authorities. Since access to Telegram is not restricted based on political views, it’s almost impossible to influence the administration. However, from a technical point of view, blocking Telegram is extremely difficult, so it’s unclear what approach the Ukrainian authorities will take.
