February 15, 2025Americans are demanding a “very strict” agreement from Kyiv for control over Ukraine’s resources.
This was reported by Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko.
“There will be a very tough agreement with the U.S. regarding our resources, and it includes hints at the privatization of some sectors of our economy,” he said.
It is worth recalling that President Volodymyr Zelensky refused to sign the U.S.-proposed draft agreement, stating that it lacked security guarantees.
According to Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin, the draft agreement was presented to Zelensky by U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink several days ago, before Treasury Secretary Bessent’s visit to Kyiv.
Yesterday in Munich, Zelensky met with American senators and stated that he could not sign the document because it contained no security guarantees for Ukraine.
However, the day before, Rogin wrote that the mineral resources agreement was presented to Zelensky by a U.S. congressional delegation at the Munich Conference. That version of the document allegedly included a requirement to transfer 50% of Ukraine’s mineral resources to American control.
Later, Rogin retracted this claim, stating that the draft agreement had been presented to Kyiv a few days earlier. However, he did not clarify whether the demand for a 50% transfer of resources remained in the final version.
Neither Washington nor Kyiv has officially confirmed such provisions in the agreement.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously stated that Americans want “all the natural resources they have.”
