“It’s a meat grinder”: U.S. State Department representative Bruce stated that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine cannot be resolved by military force
17.04.2025 13:18The United States voted against a UN resolution condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine—alongside Russia, Belarus, and Eritrea.
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution titled “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and other organizations: cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe,” which includes a reference to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
105 countries voted in favor, while nine voted against: Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, Russia, Sudan, and the United States. 33 countries abstained.
Although the resolution primarily concerned UN cooperation with the Council of Europe, the United States opposed it specifically due to the paragraph related to Ukraine.
U.S. representatives stated that the resolution contained language that “does not contribute to progress toward achieving peace.” Meanwhile, Russia claimed the resolution included “unacceptable politicized wording.”
It’s worth noting that the U.S. has consistently voted against similar resolutions in international institutions since Donald Trump’s presidency.
Initially, the U.S. blocked similar statements at the UN General Assembly and the G7, claiming that such documents might derail peace negotiations with Russia over the war in Ukraine.
Later, the U.S. also declined to support a World Trade Organization (WTO) statement condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
