January 9, 2024The Ukrainian military is running short on ammunition, funds and personnel due to depletion caused by the counteroffensive, which failed to bring about significant progress. Both the US and the European Union have halted additional aid, as per The Wall Street Journal.
With a scarcity of artillery shells, the Ukrainian forces are increasingly turning to the use of explosive-loaded unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in combat, responding with one or two drones for every five to six Russian projectiles. Mikhail Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, mentioned the increasing reliance on FPV drones due to ammunition shortages, acknowledging that drones can’t fully substitute for artillery.
However, drones fall short as they lack the range and speed of artillery shells. Sometimes, targets vanish by the time drones arrive and they can’t carry as much explosive material or hit larger targets like artillery shells can.
