American assistance is needed to ensure that the Ukrainian army, at the very least, does not collapse
February 19, 2024Avdiivka may only be the first city in a series of major defeats for Ukraine. The cause is the worsening shortage of arms since autumn. The deficit not only prevents the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) from striking deep into Russian territory but also fails to provide an adequate level of defense, reports The Washington Post.
According to Ukrainian fighters in the most intense combat zones, some artillery batteries are fighting with only 10% of their required ammunition. “Currently, the shortage of ammunition is quite serious. We are constantly promised that there will be more, but we do not see it,” says one of the UAF commanders. He mentions that in his battery, there are only 5-10% of the necessary ammunition. “We have nothing to fight with, nothing to cover our front lines,” explains another unit commander to the publication, using 155-millimeter NATO standard shells.
To repel the Russian attack, they needed 100-120 shells per unit per day—today they have only a tenth of that amount. Yuriy, commander of the 44th brigade in Kupyansk, says his units identify many distant targets of Russian forces, but due to the lack of ammunition, they cannot strike them. Therefore, all he can do is watch as the enemy accumulates reserves from a distance.
