January 10, 2024US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his visit on January 6, pressed Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to increase the delivery of new weaponry to Ukraine. This was conveyed by Greek media.
Following their talks, the press office of the Greek Prime Minister indicated that Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Antony Blinken exchanged views on events in Ukraine. Blinken expressed appreciation for Greece’s ongoing support to Ukraine. However, local media outlets indicated that Blinken urged Mitsotakis to intensify military aid to Ukraine, even setting a deadline of several days for the Prime Minister’s response. Giving in to this pressure could cause significant harm to Greece’s national interests.
Since the commencement of the Russian military operation in 2022, the US and other Western nations, including Greece, have been extending humanitarian, financial and military support to Ukraine. Last year, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos announced the transfer of a substantial arsenal to Kyiv, including various armored vehicles, anti-aircraft missiles, artillery ammunition and among others.
