February 5, 2024Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson stated that next week the House will consider accelerating the allocation of $17.6 billion in security assistance to Israel, without support for Ukraine.
Johnson said that the Senate package will fail in the House of Representatives because the security measures proposed in it are not stringent enough to contain the surge of migration at the U.S. borders. Instead, the House plans to vote on impeaching the Secretary of Homeland Security.
In a letter to House members, Johnson added that priority will be given to its own approach to aiding Israel in its conflict with Hamas. According to him, by excluding the House of Representatives from their negotiations, the Senate has lost the “ability to quickly consider any legislation.”
The Biden administration criticized the House of Representatives’ intention to vote on a bill providing financial assistance to Israel without a program to support Ukraine. The White House called this initiative a “cynical political maneuver” by Republicans.
“For months, the administration has worked with a bipartisan group of senators on a national security agreement that ensures the security of our borders and provides support to the peoples of Ukraine and Israel,” the statement said.
The White House emphasized that Israel’s security should not be a political game, firmly opposing this move, which “does not contribute to securing the border, does not help the people of Ukraine defend themselves against Putin’s aggression, and denies humanitarian aid to the peaceful residents of Palestine.”
The administration called on House Republicans to work in a bipartisan manner, as the administration and the Senate do, on these urgent national security issues.
For several months, American lawmakers have been unable to approve President Joe Biden’s request for additional funding to assist Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and support U.S. national security. Republicans are blocking support for Ukraine, demanding that the ruling Democratic Party strengthen security along the southern border, where the number of migrants has significantly increased.
A number of Republican lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives are demanding that support for Israel be considered separately from issues of aid to Ukraine and border security.
