“As we have repeatedly stated publicly, we do not plan to send military advisors, military personnel or instructors to train Ukrainians in Ukraine,” he said in response to a question about whether President Joe Biden would consider sending American instructors to Ukraine.
Sullivan made this statement aboard the U.S. President’s plane en route to France, where he intends to participate in memorial events marking the 80th anniversary of the Allies’ Normandy landings and meet with President Emmanuel Macron.
“I will note that the U.S. has established significant infrastructure in Germany for training purposes. They have trained thousands of Ukrainian soldiers to use Western-manufactured equipment. We are prepared to continue and, in fact, expand this training. We have communicated this directly to the Ukrainians,” said Sullivan. “All the training we conduct is done in very close coordination with our allies and partners. Many of them have also actively been training Ukrainians outside Ukraine. And we will continue to do so.”
“We will be able to discuss with President Macron and his officials what they think. And, of course, I will not get ahead of any announcements they may make. I will just say that we, on our part, do not plan to conduct a training mission in Ukraine,” he added, commenting on the position of the French authorities.
On June 3, radio station RFI reported that Macron might announce on June 6 the deployment of French military instructors to Ukraine. Earlier, Le Monde reported that Macron wants to create an EU coalition for the joint dispatch of instructors to Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the appearance of foreign military contingents in Ukraine would have extremely negative consequences, up to the point of being irreparable.
Recently, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced that France had decided to send its military instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian defenders. Later, the French Ministry of Defense clarified that this issue is still under consideration.
