October 29, 2024The Verkhovna Rada has approved the dismissal of Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin, with 255 deputies voting in favor of the decision.
Before the vote, Kostin addressed parliament, primarily highlighting his office’s achievements and notably avoiding the topic of corruption. His successor has not yet been named.
On October 22, Kostin announced via his Telegram channel that he had submitted his resignation. Shortly before, President Volodymyr Zelensky, addressing the issue of prosecutors allegedly securing disability status, commented on the political responsibility of the Prosecutor General. Kostin responded by agreeing with the president’s stance, emphasizing that “personal responsibility,” including political accountability, is necessary.
Rumors about Kostin’s potential dismissal and a possible appointment as ambassador to the Netherlands began circulating in early October, though speculations about his replacement date back to mid-spring. At that time, reports suggested that several ministers, along with the Prosecutor General, might be dismissed, as shared by both current and former members of parliament.
