More than half of the refugees from Ukraine have left Warsaw
December 5, 2024The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has taken a “first step” toward the mobilization of women.
This information reported according to MP and former Speaker Dmytro Razumkov.
He stated that in the first reading of Bill 12076, there is a provision under which women who complete basic military training are automatically placed on military registers and could be mobilized, even if they are not medical professionals. Razumkov is urging for this provision to be removed in the second reading.
The bill, passed on December 3, stipulates that women who meet health and age requirements and voluntarily choose to undergo basic military training will be placed on the military register of conscripts before being sent to service. After completing basic military service, they will be registered as military personnel.
Before undergoing practical training, men are required, and women may choose, to undergo a medical examination.
The Main Scientific and Expert Department of the Verkhovna Rada’s Secretariat has expressed concerns about the feasibility of placing women on the conscription register before the start of basic military training. Legal experts argue that this contradicts the essence of military registration, which is meant to evaluate the country’s mobilization resources.
It was also emphasized that military service for women remains voluntary, even during martial law, and changes to the registration process could impact mobilization capacity metrics.
