February 28, 2025The visit of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to U.S. President Donald Trump was a “sobering preview” for Ukraine.
This information reported according to Politico.
“Trump appeared unmoved by Starmer’s desperate plea for a stronger U.S. commitment to defending Ukraine,” the article states.
Starmer had planned to persuade Trump to provide military support for European forces in Ukraine. According to British officials, he requested U.S. aerial surveillance and air cover in case of a new Russian invasion.
But Trump said “no” to all of it.
“This tough stance served as a sobering early signal for European allies” ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington.
“Trump has shown that he is unlikely to promise them anything,” even when it comes to keeping Ukraine connected to Starlink or reaffirming commitment to NATO’s charter, the newspaper writes.
Additionally, the American president “brushed off questions” about what would happen if Russia attacks Ukraine again.
Meanwhile, Politico notes, “Trump is increasingly aligning U.S. interests with those of Russia, echoing Putin’s narratives about the invasion of Ukraine while simultaneously seeking to form an alliance with a rogue state.”
Earlier, Politico called French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Washington a failure.
